  • As per the US National Hurricane Center (NHC), Hurricane Grace made landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula near Quintana Roo in Mexico during the early morning hours (local time) on August 19. The NHC also stated that there is an increasing risk of hurricane-like conditions in certain areas of eastern mainland Mexico beginning August 20 and that a Hurricane Watch has been issued for the region. Heavy rainfall is expected in the Yucatan Peninsula and Veracruz state through August 22, potentially leading to urban and flash flooding as well as landslides. Additional details on the forecasted hurricane path can be found here.
  • Additionally, the NHC issued an update on the forecast for Tropical Storm (TS) Henri on August 18. TS Henri is forecast to remain close to the coast of the northeastern USA and Atlantic Canada, until August 24, potentially leading to storm surge, wind, and rains. Additionally, swells from TS Henri are expected to reach much of the eastern USA by August 20 causing high surf currents. Additional details regarding the advisory and the forecasted tropical storm path can be found here.
  • The US National Weather Service (NWS) has issued tornado warnings during the early morning hours for much of northern New Jersey. Severe weather is expected to continue along much of the eastern USA due to the remnant of post-Tropical Cyclone Fred leading to sustained rain and flooding.
  • In Colombia, the Cundinamarca Department near Bogota is experiencing travel disruptions due to landslides stemming from heavy rain on August 18. At least 25 landslides were reported throughout the department with weather officials reporting more may occur in the coming days. Several people were evacuated from the municipality of Guayabetal. Additionally, parts of central ChileTrinidad & Tobago, and Guadalajara, Mexico recorded significant flooding due to heavy rains on August 18. The flooding is expected to lead to road closures and traffic disruptions in the coming days.
  • Separately wildfires remain active in parts of California, IdahoMontana, and Washington in the USA, prompting evacuation orders and road closures. A drop in temperatures and rain forecasted in the coming days are expected to help firefighters combat the blazes. In Canada, a heatwave will persist through August 20 for many regions across the southern part of the country. Severe heat warnings have been issued for southeastern Manitoba, southern Newfoundland and Labrador, and northern Ontario. The heatwave increases the possibility of wildfires in the aforementioned regions and heat-related illnesses for vulnerable populations.
  • The inclement weather conditions are likely to cause travel disruptions and power outages in the aforementioned regions on August 19 and in the coming days.
