Europe Tactical: Protests part of ‘Global Climate Strike’ to be held regionwide on September 24; maintain vigilance
Please be advised
- Reports indicate that students and climate activist groups, including Extinction Rebellion (XR) and Fridays for Future (F4F), among others, are slated to carry out demonstrations under the ‘Global Climate Strike’ banner in multiple cities across the region on September 24.
- The protests have been organized as part of the United Nations Climate week. Protesters will be calling for stronger action to tackle climate change and policies to address other social and economic challenges. Similar demonstrations under the banner were held regionwide on March 19.

- Similar demonstrations are scheduled to be held in other major cities in the region on September 24.
Assessments
- Judging by the known mobilization capacity of the groups involved, the demonstrations are likely to attract turnouts in the high hundreds to low thousands in each location, with the largest turnouts likely to be witnessed in Amsterdam, Berlin, London, and Vienna.
- Based on precedent and considering the disruptive tactics climate activists engage in during their demonstrations, the events carry a latent potential of unrest. Security officers may resort to forcible dispersal measures to disperse the crowd and conduct mass arrests in the event of widespread unrest. As such, a bolstered security presence is liable to be deployed in the vicinity of all protest locations. Spontaneous demonstrations around government buildings are also likely to be held.
- Significant disruptions to vehicular and pedestrian traffic are expected in the vicinity of the protest locations from the morning hours onward. Additionally, as seen with recent XR actions, activists are liable to attempt to block major roads and access to public and private buildings during the protests. Traffic is likely to be diverted to support security cordons.

Those operating or residing in the aforementioned cities in Europe on September 24 are advised to maintain vigilance due to the latent potential for unrest during the slated demonstrations.
