Italy Tactical: Multiple labor unions to hold protests in Milan, Rome on October 13-14; allot for disruptions

Please be advised

  • Multiple trade unions, including Funzione Pubblica Confederazione Generale Italiana del Lavoro (FP CGIL), Confederazione Italiana Sindacati Lavoratori Funzione Pubblica (Cisl FP), and Unione Italiana del Lavoro Pubblica Amministrazione (UILPA), will hold protests in Milan and Rome on October 13-14. The protests are being held to demand more employment opportunities within the public sector, with the participating unions citing staff shortages and associated inefficiencies.
  • In Milan, the protest will be held at Porta Vittoria at 10:00 (local time) on October 13.

  • In Rome, the protest will be held at Piazza Cavour in front of the Supreme Court at 10:00 on October 14.

Assessments

  1. Based on the mobilization capabilities of the unions, coupled with social media estimates, the protests in Milan and Rome are expected to attract turnouts ranging in the low-to-mid hundreds each. A bolstered security presence is likely to be deployed in the vicinity of the protest locations to monitor proceedings.
  2. Given the nature of the protest issue, the demonstrations are liable to transpire peacefully without major instances of unrest. However, low-level scuffles between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.
  3. Disruptions to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic are anticipated in the vicinity of Porta Vittoria in Milan and Piazza Cavour in Rome from the late morning hours onwards.
