Mexico & USA Tactical (UPDATE): TS Pamela to strengthen to Category 2 hurricane in Sinaloa, associated disruptions forecast in southern USA on October 12-13; remain abreast of alerts

  • The Mexican national weather agency, Servicio Meteorologico Nacional (SMN) forecasts Tropical Storm Pamela (TS Pamela) to strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane and is expected to make landfall in Sinaloa on October 12. 
  • According to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC), TS Pamela is moving toward the north-northwest at 13km/h, as of October 11. A hurricane warning is in effect from Bahia Tempehuaya to Escuinapa in Sinaloa. Meanwhile, a tropical storm warning for north of Bahia Tempehuaya to Altata, south of Escuinapa to Cabo Corrientes, and Isla Marias in Sinaloa, and a tropical storm watch for Los Barilles to Cabo San Lucas in Baja California Sur are in effect as of October 12.   • Heavy rains are forecast in Jalisco, Nayarit, Sinaloa, Baja California Sur, Colima, Durango, and Michoacan. Associated flooding and landslides are also expected in the aforementioned regions from October 12 onwards.  
  • The Coordinacion Nacional de Proteccion Civil (CNPC) federal agency has also announced the closure of ports for large and small vessels at Rosarito in Baja California, Loreto in Baja California Sur, and Puerto Penasco in Sonora, until further notice. While ports including San Felipe in Baja California, Manzanillo in Colima, San Blas in Nayarit, Barra de Navidad in Jalisco, and Golfo de Santa Clara, Puerto Libertad, Bahia Kino in Sonora will remain closed for small boats, until further notice.  
  • Additionally, the NHC has forecast heavy rains associated with the remnants of TS Pamela across portions of central Texas and southeastern Oklahoma in the USA on October 13 and 14, with associated flash flooding also likely.  

Recommendations

  1. Those operating or residing in the aforementioned regions in Mexico and the USA on October 12 and the coming days are advised to remain abreast of local authorities’ alerts regarding weather-related risks. 
  2. Confirm that places, where you will be located, have working generators in case of power outages while packing sufficient batteries and flashlights. 
  3. If not in an area ordered for evacuation, stay at home, close storm shutters, and stay away from windows. Secure any loose objects outdoors. 
  4. Allot for disruptions to public service and travel.
