  • Activists associated with Extinction Rebellion (XR) will hold demonstrations in London on August 25 and 27 as part of their “Impossible Rebellion” campaign that began on August 23.
  • On August 25, activists will demonstrate at Piccadilly Circus at 11:30 (local time) under the banner “Courage Calls To Courage: Women and FINT Rebellion Action”.
  • On August 27, activists will conduct a march through central London culminating at the Bank of England at 12:00 under the banner “Blood Money March”.
  • A total of 102 protesters have been arrested in London since the “Impossible Rebellion” campaign began.

Assessments

  1. Based on precedent, the demonstrations on August 25 and 27 are expected to witness turnouts ranging in the mid-to-high hundreds.
  2. Given heightened sentiments and precedent from protests over the previous days, the demonstrations carry a potential for unrest in the vicinity of Piccadilly Circus and the Bank of England. Unrest in the form of clashes between protesters and police, as well as incidents of vandalism, including smearing the facade of targeted buildings with paint, can be expected during the demonstrations. Police are liable to conduct arrests in the case of widespread unrest or significant traffic disruptions. As such, security is likely to be bolstered in the vicinity of Piccadilly Circus on August 25 and the Bank of England on August 27 from the slated protest timings.
  3. Given that XR activists are known to block roads during protests, major disruptions to pedestrian and vehicular traffic can be anticipated in the vicinity of Piccadilly Circus on August 25 and the Bank of England on August 27.

Recommendations

Those operating or residing in London on August 25 and 27 are advised to maintain vigilance due to the potential for unrest and allot for traffic disruptions in the vicinity of Piccadilly Circus and the Bank of England during the slated protest timings.
