Europe Tactical (UPDATE): Inclement weather alerts in place, associated travel disruptions reported in multiple countries, per January 11 reports; remain abreast of updates

Current Situation

  • Europe’s regional weather agency, Meteoalarm, has issued red and orange alerts, the highest and second-highest on a three-tier scale, for multiple countries regionwide for strong winds, low temperatures, snowand ice through January 12.  
  • In Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), orange alerts for wind are effective in Foca and Trebinje through January 12. 
  • In Bulgaria, orange alerts for winds, as well as snow and ice, are in place in Dobrich, SilistraRazgrad, and Ruse until January 12.
  • In Croatia, orange alerts for winds are in place in the Middle Dalmatia region and Velebit channel region until January 12.
  • In Germany, a large part of the country is under the orange alerts for low temperatures and snow or ice, effective through January 11.
  • Red alerts for snow or ice will be in place across western and southern Germany on January 12.
  • In Hungary, orange alerts for ice and snow are in place in the central part of the country, including in Budapest, through January 12.
  • IItaly, red alerts for strong winds are in place for Sardinia and Calabria, along with orange alerts for strong winds in Sicily through January 12.  
  • In Montenegro, orange alerts for wind are in place nationwide until January 12.  
  • In Poland, orange alerts for ice and snow are in place in the southern parts of Malopolskie and Slaskie voivodships, as well as in the northern part of the country, through January 12. 
  • In Slovakia, orange alerts for ice and snow are in place in the northern regions through January 12.

  • In Belgium, the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) has issued a yellow alert for slippery conditions across the entire territory of Belgium on January 11. The alert is due to the formation of ice patches and the presence of residual snow following overnight frost. Road surfaces are affected by sub-zero temperatures combined with remaining humidity, resulting in black ice. Driving conditions are described as hazardous, including on roads that appear clear.

  • In Greece, the National Meteorological Service has issued warnings for adverse weather on January 11. The warnings are due to rain, thunderstorms, snow in the northern areas, strong winds, and a decrease in temperature. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in the Dodecanese.

  • In the Netherlands on January 11, temperatures will range from -4 degrees Celsius to -9 degrees Celsius, with frost in the northeast and wind chill lowering perceived temperatures to -16 degrees Celsius. Precipitation is expected in the western regions, which may cause slippery conditions on frozen roads. Overnight, snow and supercooled rain are expected in the east and northeast.

  • In Sweden, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued a warning for snowfall combined with wind for Gotland. The warning is valid until 20:00 (local time) on January 11. As a result, ferries between Nynashamn and Gotland are cancelled.

  • In the UK, an amber weather warning for snow, indicating significant disruption and second on the three-tier scale, is in effect in central and northeastern Scotland, from north of Glasgow to Aberdeen, until 14:00 (local time) on January 11. Yellow warnings, the lowest on the three-tier scale, for strong winds apply to northern and western Scotland, northern England, and parts of Wales. Yellow warnings for heavy rain are in force in southern and central England, southern Wales, and eastern Scotland.

  •  On January 7, Deutsche Bahn warned that train services in northern Germany will remain severely restricted until January 11, with long-distance services gradually resuming on January 11. Severe frost, snowdrifts, and frozen switches, particularly around Hanover and Schleswig-Holstein, are causing delays, cancellations, and reduced speeds on major routes including Hamburg–Berlin, Kiel/Hamburg–Frankfurt/Wurzburg, Hanover–Frankfurt/Wurzburg, and Cologne–Frankfurt. Some routes, such as Westerland–Hamburg and Hamburg/Berlin–Rostock/Binz, are currently not operating. 
  • In Hamburg, the S-Bahn continues to face disruptions due to weather conditions, with limited operations expected through at least January 12.

  • As per Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) announcement on January 8, heavy snowfall forecast for large parts of Europe may cause significant flight delays and disruptions at the airport. Passengers are advised to check their flight status regularly and prepare for winter conditions.

  • Dutch airline KLM Royal Dutch Airlines issued a warning on January 10 about continued uncertainty due to Storm Goretti, which is expected to bring strong winds, snow, and freezing rain through January 12. The airline, the largest operator at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport (AMS), said hundreds of flights have been cancelled since January 2, affecting an estimated 300,000 ticketed passengers.
