MENA Alert (UPDATE): US President Trump announces suspension of ultimatum, two-week ceasefire with Iran during overnight hours of April 7-8; monitor regional developments
Current Situation:
- During the overnight hours of April 7-8 (Iran time), US President Donald Trump announced that following Pakistani mediators’ request to postpone his ultimatum to Iran, which was slated to expire within a couple of hours, and subject to Iran agreeing to the complete reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, he agreed to suspend attacks against Iran for a period of two weeks.
- He indicated that this would be a mutual ceasefire.
- He further indicated that the US received a ten-point proposal from Iran and believes it is a workable basis for negotiations.
- Emerging Iranian reports frame the development as a retreat by President Trump and a caving in to Tehran’s demands.
- A report citing the White House indicated that Israel is part of the ceasefire and hence, Jerusalem will also suspend its attacks against Iran. A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon is not included within this framework, as per current reports.
- Immediately following Trump’s announcement, Iranian launches of missiles against Israel’s Jerusalem area were recorded. There were no indications of impacts and injuries.
- It is still unclear when the ceasefire will come into force as of the time of writing.

Recommendations:
Continue to shelter in place and monitor regional developments until details of the ceasefire, particularly its formal entry into force, become clearer over the coming hours.
