Americas Tactical: Storms, tornadoes prompt warnings in USA as rains prompt red alerts in Brazil, Dominican Republic on May 9; remain cognizant of authorities’ updates

Current Situation

  • In Brazil, the Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET) has issued red alerts, the highest on a three-tier scale, for heatwaves in Minas Gerais, Parana, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Mato Grosso, Goias, and Mato Grosso do Sul as of May 9. Further details regarding the alerts can be found here.  
  • Meanwhile, floods caused by heavy rains have left over 100 individuals dead and 1.5 million homeless in 401 municipalities across southern Rio Grande do Sul as of May 9. 
  • Additionally, all operations at Aeroporto Internacional de Porto Alegre (POA) in Porto Alegre remain suspended as of May 9, following the initial cancellation of over 200 flights on May 4 due to flooding.  
  • In the Dominican Republic, the Centro de Operaciones de Emergencias (COE), emergency operations center, has issued a red alert, the highest on a three-tier scale, due to heavy rainfall in five provinces: Duarte, La Vega, Puerto Plata, Monte Cristi, and Santiago Rodriguez as of May 9.   • In the USA, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued severe thunderstorm warnings in parts of Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina on May 9. Flash flood warnings have been issued in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee due to heavy rains, potentially causing flooding in various areas. NWS also issued a tornado watch for parts of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and North Carolina as of May 9, with damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph and large hail events. At least 50 tornadoes were reported from Oklahoma to Ohio, causing damage and power outages, with one fatality in Barnsdall, Oklahoma. 
  • Additionally, on May 9, the Storm Prediction Center issued a Moderate Risk, the second highest on a five-tier scale, as well as a Moderate Risk level, the second highest on a four-tier scale, for excessive rainfall in southeastern states through at least May 11.
