Americas Tactical (UPDATE): Tropical Storm Alberto diminishes into Tropical Depression following landfall in Mexico as heavy rains prompt alerts, disruptions regionwide on June 21; remain cognizant of authorities’ updates

Current Situation

  • Environment Canada (EC) has maintained a red alert, the highest on a three-tier scale, for high temperatures in Ontario on June 21, and for parts of Northwest Territories until June 22.
  • In Chile, the Servicio Nacional de Prevencion y Atencion de Desastres (SENAPRED) issued a red alert, the highest on a three-tier scale, for overflows in local water bodies due to heavy rains in Sagrada Familia in Curico province and San Rafael in Talca province of Maule region and for Curanilahue in Biobio as of June 21. SENAPRED has also ordered the evacuation of the Pichilo, El Llepo, Las Corrientes, and La Faja sectors of the Biobio region as of June 21 amid overflow of Rio Pichilo.
  • Sinkholes were identified along Ruta 148, connecting Concepcion to Florida, near Curapalihue, Biobio, and the Camino Internacional roadway in Concon, Valparaiso on June 20. Travel disruptions are ongoing on said roads as of writing.

  • Tropical Depression Alberto is forecast to move westward towards the Sierra Madre Occidental on June 21. The Servicio Meterologico Nacional (SMN) has forecast torrential rains in Coahuila, Colima, Jalisco, Michoacan, Nuevo Leon, Oaxaca, Puebla, San Luis Potosi, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz, in addition to strong to very strong gusts of wind in states of northwestern Mexico, on June 21.
  • Separately, the SMN has forecast the development of cyclonic conditions in the Yucatan Peninsula on June 21, with the possible formation of waterspouts along the coasts of Campeche, Guerrero, Tabasco, Veracruz, and Yucatan. Given this, the Administracion Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo (APIQROO) has maintained port closures for small craft and vessels in in Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Juarez, Puerto Morelos, and Punta Sam, as of June 20.
