Americas Tactical: NHC issues warnings for Hurricane Larry, TS Mindy, TS Olaf across North America on September 9; remain cognizant of authorities’ updates

  • The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued several advisories and warnings for Tropical Storm Mindy (TS Mindy) and Hurricane Larry on the Atlantic and for Tropical Storm Olaf (TS Olaf) on the Central Pacific for September 9.  
  • TS Mindy is moving towards the northeast at 31 km/h and is expected to move across the USA’s northern Florida Peninsula and south-eastern Georgia and into the Atlantic on September 9. TS Mindy is expected to cause heavy rainfall and isolated to scattered flooding in South Carolina, Florida Panhandle, and in the southern portions of Georgia in the USA.   • The NHC has issued a Hurricane Watch for Baja California Sur in Mexico from Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos, while a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect from Baja California Sur’s Los Barriles to Santa Fe for September 9 and 10 as TS Olaf is moving toward the north-northwest at 11 km/h along the Gulf of Mexico. The tropical storm is expected to strengthen to a hurricane on September 10. Heavy rains are possible with this, across Baja California Sur through September 11, with the possibility of flash floods and mudslides also likely. Additional details can be found here. 
  • Additionally, the NHC has also issued a Hurricane Watch for south-eastern Newfoundland from St. Schotts to Pouch Cove and a Tropical Storm Watch for South-eastern Newfoundland from Lamaline to west of St. Schotts and from north of Pouch Cove to Bonavista in Canada through September 10. Further, a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Bermuda on September 9. Additional details can be found here. 

Recommendations

  1. Those operating or residing in the aforementioned regions in the Americas on September 9 and the coming days are advised to remain cognizant of local authorities’ alerts regarding weather-related risks.       
  2. Confirm that your present location has working generators in case of power outages while packing sufficient batteries and flashlights.      
  3. If not in an area ordered for evacuation, stay at home, close storm shutters, and stay away from windows. Secure any loose objects outdoors.    
  4. Allot for disruptions to public service and travel.
