Americas Tactical: Tropical Storm watch issued in Caribbean, wildfires continue in California on August 10; remain abreast of local authorities’ alerts

  • The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Dominica, parts of the Dominican RepublicGuadeloupe, parts of HaitiMartiniquePuerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands during the night hours (local time) on August 9. Potential Tropical Cyclone Six has a 90 percent chance of developing into a Tropical Cyclone in the next 48 hours. 
  • The NHC stated that Tropical Storm conditions are expected in the Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands by the afternoon hours on August 10 and in the Dominican Republic by August 11. Northern Haiti may be impacted by the Tropical Storm on the night of August 11. 
  • Separately, the US National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple severe thunderstorm and flash flooding warnings for August 10-12, focusing most prominently on the Northern Plains and Midwest. The NWS’ Storm Prediction Center has indicated that the region encompassing eastern Iowa, southern Wisconsin, and northern Illinois is at “Enhanced Risk” for severe thunderstorms on August 10. O’Hare International Airport (ORD) outside of Chicago, IL witnessed a ground-stop due to severe weather during the night hours on August 9. 
  • Additionally, there are four active fires in California as of the overnight hours August 9-10 according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire). The Dixie Fire impacting parts of Butte, Lassen, Plumas, and Tehama counties is 22 percent contained and is the second-largest wildfire in the history of the state. The fire has burned 489,287 acres and destroyed 433 buildings as of the morning of August 9. Many areas near the fire remain under mandatory evacuation orders. 
  • The River Fire impacting parts of Nevada and Placer counties is 68 percent contained, while the smaller House Fire and Nelson Fire are 70 percent contained or more. Wildfires have also led to road closures in parts of Idaho and Montana in recent days.

Recommendations

  1. Those operating or residing in the aforementioned regions in the Americas on August 10 and the coming days are advised to remain abreast of local authorities’ alerts regarding weather-related risks.  
  2. In case of a wildfire in your area, prepare for evacuation, should it be ordered.
