Asia Tactical: Tropical depression in Philippines reduced to LPA on December 19; remain cognizant of local updates

Current Situation:

  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert, the second highest on a four-tier scale, for very heavy rains, thunderstorms, and lightning in coastal Andhra Pradesh and a yellow alert, the second lowest, for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning in Rayalaseema due to a Low-Pressure Area (LPA) over the Bay of Bengal on December 19.

  • The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) located Tropical Depression Querubin outside of the Philippines Area of Responsibility (PAR), and downgraded the weather system from a tropical depression to an LPA on December 19.  
  • The PAGASA forecast the LPA to bring scattered rains across the country on December 19. Scattered rain is also anticipated in the eastern portion of Southern Luzon, while the northeast monsoon will bring some rains to the rest of Luzon.

  • The Department of Meteorology in Sri Lanka stated that the LPA moved away from the country on December 19.  
  • Additionally, the weather authorities forecast heavy rainfall in the Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Uva, and Western provinces, as well as in some parts of Central and Northern provinces on December 19.
