Germany Tactical: Railway services to remain suspended due to nationwide rail workers’ strike until 02:00 (local time) on August 13; allot for disruptions

Please be advised

  • Reports indicate that a nationwide strike by the Gewerkschaft Deutscher Lokomotivfuhrer (GDL) train drivers’ union is ongoing, as of August 11. The strike has been organized by the union to demand an increase in the wages of the workers of Deutsche Bahn.
  • The strike has prompted the suspension of freight services and passenger services remain suspended since 02:00 (local time) on August 11. The strike will continue through 02:00 on August 13.
  • Nationwide regional and long-distance rail services will remain suspended during the strike, with a minimum of 25 percent of the operations guaranteed during the hours of the strike. International train traffic will also remain affected until August 13.

Assessments

  1. Given the nationwide presence of the union involved, the strike is likely to be widely adhered to, with significant disruptions to regional and long-distance rail services expected until August 13.
  2. As such, increased crowding is expected on other available trains, along with an increased demand for alternative modes of transport.
  3. While no associated protests have been announced as of writing, spontaneous demonstrations by rail workers can be expected outside the offices of the Deutsche Bahn and outside key rail stations from August 11- 13. Potential demonstrations are likely to transpire peacefully without incidents of unrest.

Recommendations

Those operating or residing in Germany on August 11-13 are advised to allot for disruptions to rail services and a possible increase in road traffic during the period of the strike.
