Germany Tactical: Traffic restrictions in place due to half marathon in Berlin starting from 10:00 (local time) on April; 6; remain abreast of authorities’ updates

Current Situation

  •  The 45th edition of the Generali Berlin Half Marathon will take place on April 6, starting from Strasse des 17. Juni, located between the Brandenburg Gate and the Victory Column in Berlin at 10:00 (local time). Details regarding the marathon route are available here (in German). According to the organisers, around 40,000 athletes will participate in the marathon.
  • In preparation for the marathon, authorities announced that traffic restrictions are ongoing in multiple corridors. Strasse des 17. Juni has been closed in both directions between Yitzhak-Rabin-Strasse and Behrenstrasse since the morning hours on April 4. From around 18:00, the closure will extend further, blocking both directions from Grosser Stern.
  • In addition, several nearby streets will also be closed for the event on April 4, including Annemarie-Renger-Strasse, Ebertstrasse, Heinrich-von-Gagern-Strasse, John-Foster-Dulles-Allee, Paul-Loebe-Allee, Scheidemannstrasse, and Yitzhak-Rabin-Strasse. These closures are expected to remain in place until the early morning hours of April 7.
  • On April 6, Unter den Linden will be completely closed between Brandenburg Gate and Friedrichstrasse from 07:00. The closure of the entire route will begin at 08:00, 75 minutes before the first start. Roads will gradually reopen after the last runner passes and the route is cleared.
  • Authorities have advised travelers to use the A100 city motorway as an alternative route. The race route can be crossed via the Tiergarten Tunnel and the tunnel at Adenauerplatz. However, road users should be prepared for longer travel times on the A100 throughout the event. Further details are available here.

Assessments & Forecast

  1. Based on organizers’ estimates, the marathon is expected to see participants in the mid tens of thousands, with spectators ranging from the mid to high tens of thousands.
  2. Given the aforementioned road closures, severe travel disruptions are expected to continue throughout Berlin until the morning hours of April 7. Public transportation services are likely to run on altered schedules, with overcrowding expected at stations operating near the starting points.
  3. While authorities have not indicated any specific threat to the marathon event, they are likely to remain on heightened alert for potential Islamist plots targeting the event, as large crowds present a plausible target for Islamist terrorists. Additionally, risk of opportunistic crimes, such as pickpocketing and thefts, also remains elevated.

Recommendations

  1. Those operating or residing in Berlin on April 6 are advised to remain abreast of authorities’ updates regarding travel regulations in the central city areas due to the slated marathon event.
  2. Alert authorities immediately upon witnessing suspicious items or behavior.
  3. Allot for significant disruptions to travel due to the associated road closures and traffic restrictions.
