Guinea Alert (UPDATE): Coup leaders form new transitional body as civilians in Conakry celebrate removal of President Conde on September 5; minimize movement

Please be advised

  • On national television on September 5,  Lieutenant Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya and the other coup leaders made a new statement in which they said they seized power under the aegis of the newly formed National Committee for Reconciliation and Development (CNRD).
  • They reiterated that the constitution had been dissolved and that they would engage in national consultations for a “peaceful transition”. They said additional information would be provided later.
  • Unconfirmed reports indicate that another elite military unit, the Autonomous Battalion of Airborne Troops (BATA), has come to the support of the coup leaders and CNRD.
  • Reports indicate that there were celebrations in central areas of Conakry during the afternoon hours of September 5. Crowds reportedly gathered and showed support for removal of President Alpha Conde from office.
  • Photos purportedly showed President Conde in a vehicle with soldiers, believed to be transporting him from the palace where he was arrested. His current whereabouts remain unknown as of writing.
  • Leading opposition figure Cellou Dalein Diallo reportedly denied rumors that he had been arrested by the military.
  • The National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC) opposition coalition issued a statement acknowledging the coup and reiterating their belief that President Conde’s government was illegal after March 2020, when a referendum was held to allow Conde to run for a third term.
  • The government of Nigeria released a statement condemning the coup. However, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union have not issued statements on the subject as of the time of writing.
