Iraq Alert: Two rockets fall in vicinity of Baghdad’s Green Zone during early morning hours (local time) of July 29; highlights risk of collateral damage

Please be advised:

  • Reports indicate that two rockets were fired at Baghdad’s Green Zone during the early morning hours of July 29.
  • The US’s Counter Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar (C-RAM) system stationed in the area reportedly failed to intercept the two projectiles.
  • Both rockets landed in Baghdad’s Mansour District, resulting in material damage to several vehicles and a house. No casualties were reported.

Assessments & Forecast:

This incident comes amid persistent attacks by Iran-backed Shiite militias against targets linked to the US in central and northern Iraq. Such attacks are part of these groups resolve to pressure Washington to fully withdraw its troops from Iraqi soil. The fact that the projectiles were not successfully intercepted indicates the gaps in the US’s air defense protocols within the Green Zone. As illustrated by the material damage incurred, these attacks carry an elevated risk to uninvolved civilians and foreign nationals located within and around the fortified Green Zone. This is particularly given that even if the US’s air defense system manages to intercept such devices, falling debris during such interceptions could cause indiscriminate collateral damage. FORECASTIran-backed Shiite militias will continue to carry out attacks targeting US-linked interests in Iraq over the coming days and weeks. This includes the US Embassy compound in the Green Zone and the US’s Victory Military Complex at the Baghdad International Airport. The risk of collateral damage during such attacks will remain high.

Recommendations:

  1. It is advised to avoid nonessential travel to Baghdad due to the threat of militancy and civil unrest. The threat of militancy is higher in the outskirts, particularly in Shiite-populated neighborhoods. Contact us at [email protected] or +44 20-3540-0434 for itinerary and contingency support options.
  2. For those conducting essential operations in Baghdad, it is advised to restrict travel to the Green Zone. Ensure that contingency and emergency evacuation plans are updated as Iran-backed Shiite militias have been known to conduct attacks against the locale as well as the Baghdad International Airport.
  3. Remain vigilant of the risk of roadside IEDs planted throughout Iraq by Shiite militias, which are aimed at targeting US-linked logistical convoys but carry a risk of collateral damage due to misidentification. It is advised that any travel, particularly in outlying areas, be conducted in armored vehicles, with proper security escorts and coordination with authorities.
