Israel Tactical: ‘Maccabiah Night Race’ to take place in Jerusalem between 16:00 (local time)-23:00 on August 29; allot for disruptions

Please be advised:

  • The “Maccabiah Night Race” is being organized as part of the annual “Maccabiah 2021” event, considered the world’s largest Jewish athletic competition.  
  • There are two marathons being organized on August 29: a five km run slated to begin at 20:10 (local time), following which a ten km run will begin at 20:50.  
  • Participants will gather at the intersection of the Knesset and the Israel Museum to begin the marathons and end at Sacher Park. Additional details including the full route maps can be found here. 
  • The following roads will be closed from 18:30 until 22:30: Sderot Ben Tsvi Street, Sderot Haim Hazaz, Sderot Hamuseonim, Derech Ruppin, Sderot Wolfson, Eliezer Kaplan Street, Yitzhak Rabin Street, Rothschild Street, Derech Brodecki, Sderot Balfour, Derech Elyashar, and Professor Racah Street. Parking on these streets for the duration of the road closures is prohibited to the public.  
  • Parking for event participants is allocated at Haleom Park and Cinema City. 
  • Between 18:30-21:30, other entertainment activities will simultaneously take place in the area.  

Assessments & Forecast:

FORECAST: The turnout for the whole event is liable to be in the mid-to-high thousands based on past precedent. While the event is likely to transpire peacefully, bolstered security is likely as a general precautionary measure. Localized disruptions to traffic are likely to occur due to the road closures in the vicinity of Israel Museum, Knesset, and Sacher Park from the late afternoon hours of August 29 until the completion of the marathons and scheduled entertainment events. 

Recommendations:

Those operating or residing in Jerusalem on August 29 are advised to allot for disruptions to travel and seek alternative routes in the vicinity of the aforementioned locales in Jerusalem from the afternoon hours due to the planned road closures and the running events.
