Israel Tactical: Nationwide anti-government protests, including in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, slated at 19:00 on February 22; maintain heightened vigilance

Current Situation:

  • Anti-government activists from the “Kaplan Force” group have called for a protest in several cities in Israel, including at multiple locations in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem on February 22 at 19:00 (local time).
  • In Tel Aviv, protests have been called for in three locations: Arie Pasternak Street 5, Wissotsky Street 5, and Yitzhak (Zico) Graziani 8, located on Derech Menachem Begin Street.
  • In Jerusalem, protesters will gather at Shderot Herzl & Ha-Meyasdim Street.
  • According to the Kaplan Force, some of these protests are slated to be held in front of houses of Members of the Knesset.
  • Protests during the evening hours have been called in other locations nationwide, including in Netanya and Ramat Gan.

Assessments & Forecast:

  1. Anti-government protests in Israel have been taking place relatively frequently in recent days, with protesters denouncing the government’s perceived mishandling of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war and their alleged failure to secure the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. In the same vein, other anti-government protests have also called for a re-election due to this perceived failure. In this context, the latest calls for protests align with the politically charged momentum that has been triggering protests in recent days in the country.
  2. FORECAST: Given precedent and the mobilization capacity of the organization, the upcoming protests in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem will likely garner a turnout in the high dozens at least in each location. Incidents of unrest involving security personnel dispersing protesters cannot be ruled out. This is especially given that the protest locations include areas that are close to the residences of Members of the Knesset and will likely lead to the increased presence of security forces. Limited traffic disruptions in the aforementioned areas in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem are likely on February 22.

Recommendations:

Those operating or residing in Israel, particularly in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, on February 22 are advised to maintain heightened vigilance at protest vicinities due to the slated protest and associated risk of unrest.
