Libya Alert (UPDATE): Militias’ mobilization toward Tripoli reported during overnight hours on May 11-12; avoid all travel to capital

Current Situation:

  • Reports from the overnight hours (local time) on May 11-12 indicate that some militias’ have been mobilizing toward Tripoli. Armed convoys from Zintan, Zawiyah, and Misrata have reportedly made their way to the capital.   
  • An unconfirmed report indicates that Misrata’s 111 Brigade is involved in the mobilization.   
  • At the current juncture, no clear reasons have been provided by any of the armed groups regarding the reasons behind the reported mobilization.  
  • On May 11, the Greater Tripoli Union Council issued a statement denouncing the mobilization and threat to civilian lives in the city. The council called the authorities to contain the situation and protect residents.  
  • Misrata’s mayor has reportedly denied the municipality’s involvement in any direction of mobilization and military operations in Tripoli.  
  • Tripoli’s “Abu Salim Youth” group also condemned the mobilization and stated they held the Presidential Council (PC) responsible for protecting the city.  
  • The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) called on all involved parties on May 12 to de-escalate tensions and refrain from any “provocative” actions. 
  • Unconfirmed reports from May 11 indicate that following “disagreements” between militias and the Government of National Unity (GNU), meetings were slated to be held between the parties. These reportedly included the Stability Support Apparatus (SSA). 
  • This follows reported tensions surrounding developments at the Libyan Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology Company (LPTIC) in Tripoli, which allegedly resulted in inter-militia clashes in al-Khums on May 8.   
  • The GNU’s Interior Ministry stated on May 9 that the police had taken over the security of the LPTIC building.
