Malaysia Tactical: Traffic, security measures announced ahead of ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur between May 23-28; allot for disruptions
Current Situation:
- The authorities announced traffic and security measures for the 46th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Kuala Lumpur between May 23-28.
- Traffic disruptions were announced across multiple highways and roads across the Klang Valley, including Kuala Lumpur from 07:30-20:00 (local time) on May 23-28 in lieu of the slated event.
- The Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) announced that affected routes include those linking Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) and Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB) in Subang to the city center, official accommodation venues, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), and Istana Negara.
- In Kuala Lumpur, six highways will be affected including the Maju Expressway, Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway, Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway, Shah Alam Expressway, and the SMART Tunnel. Several other roads are also slated to be affected during the aforementioned days. These include Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan Perak, Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Tun Ismail, and Jalan Damansara.
- The Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order stated that over 6,200 security personnel will be deployed in Kuala Lumpur throughout the summit period, with further deployments expected if deemed necessary.
- The JSPT announced that a total of 789 traffic personnel will be deployed throughout the summit. The deployment includes 313 traffic outriders, 34 patrol cars or multi-purpose vehicles, and 190 motorcycles.
- Additionally, Malaysia’s Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) has announced various security measures to ensure smooth operational proceedings for participating delegates. Additional stationing of personnel at KUL Terminal 1 and 2, as well as along the route towards the Bunga Raya Complex will take place during the slated days.
