Morocco Tactical: UMT to protest outside Regional Directorate of Employment in Casablanca at 11:00 (local time) on October 13; maintain heightened vigilance

Please be advised:

  • The Moroccan Labor Union (UMT) has called for a protest outside Casablanca’s Regional Directorate of Employment at 11:00 (local time) on October 13.
  • The protest is being organized due to multiple disagreements between UMT members and the management of the Casablanca School of Engineering (EIGSICA), including the alleged unfair dismissal of a UMT member, which was not properly investigated by a government inspector.

Assessments & Forecast:

The UMT’s disagreements with the EIGSICA is a niche issue.  FORECAST:
Therefore, while the protest will witness participation from the union’s members, it is unlikely to gain much public support. That said, given the UMT’s high fellowship and precedence of previous UMT-organized demonstrations, participation at least in the mid-to-high dozens can be expected at the upcoming protest. Security forces may attempt to secure the area around the Regional Directorate of Employment, which may cause traffic congestion in the surrounding roads. Although the protest will likely transpire peacefully, there is a slight possibility that security forces may intervene to contain the protest, which may lead to localized unrest.

Recommendations:

Those residing or operating in Casablanca on October 13 are advised to maintain heightened vigilance and to allot for travel disruptions in the environs of the Regional Directorate of Employment.
