Netherlands Tactical: Multiple protests slated to be held nationwide, including in Amsterdam, The Hague on September 11-12; allot for disruptions
Please be advised
- On September 11-12, protests are slated to be held in several cities nationwide.
- On September 11, protest marches by supporters of the “Unmute Us” movement, calling for the complete and restriction-free reopening of the event industry, will be held in Amsterdam, The Hague, and other cities. All the protests will begin at 14:00 (local time). Details regarding start points of the demonstrations are as follows:
City | Start Location |
Amsterdam | Westerpark |
Eindhoven | Klokgebouw |
Enschede | Molenstraat |
Groningen | Concourslaan |
Leiden | Lammermarkt |
Maastricht | Mecc Maastricht |
Nijmegen | Waalkade |
The Hague | Malieveld |
Tilburg | Stuivesantplein |
Utrecht | Maliebaan |
- Activists in Rotterdam are expected to attend the demonstration in The Hague. The marches in Amsterdam and The Hague will end at Westerpark and Malieveld respectively after passing through central streets in both cities.
- On September 12, civil society activists are expected to stage a protest to denounce the housing crisis in Amsterdam. The protest will be held at Westerpark at 14:00 to demand guarantees on sufficient and affordable housing, among others.
Assessments
- Based on previous demonstrations by Unmute Us, the combined turnout for the slated protests is expected to be in the mid-to-high tens of thousands. The organizer’s estimates suggest that attendance for the protest on September 12 is liable to be in the low thousands.
- All the protests are likely to transpire largely peacefully and without instances of major unrest. While the potential for localized scuffles cannot be ruled out entirely, these are not expected to escalate into widespread unrest. Regardless, a bolstered police presence is expected to be deployed in the vicinity of all the demonstrations as a precaution and to monitor proceedings.
- Significant disruptions to vehicular and pedestrian traffic may be experienced on both days in Amsterdam and other affected cities.
Recommendations
Those operating or residing in Amsterdam, The Hague, and other cities on September 11-12 are advised to allot for disruptions to travel in the vicinity of the planned protests.
