Northern Mariana Islands Tactical: USGS raises alert level for Pagan volcano on September 2 following low-level emissions; remain cognizant of local updates

Please be advised:

  • The US Geological Survey (USGS) elevated the alert level for Pagan volcano in the Northern Mariana Islands to “orange” during the morning hours (local time) on September 2 following low-level emissions. 
  • The emissions were observed throughout the day on September 1. They were followed by continuous low-level gas and ash plumes extending 650 km from the volcano as recorded by satellite images on September 2, pointing to continuing activity. 
  • Under the USGS alert-level system, orange indicates heightened or escalating unrest, with increased potential of eruption or continuing eruption with no or minor volcanic-ash emissions posing limited hazards. 
  • People were urged to avoid traveling in the immediate area around Pagan due to safety concerns.  
  • According to Guam’s National Weather Service, there is no reported impact of the volcano’s activity on the island as of writing.

Those operating or residing in the Northern Mariana Islands on September 2 and over the coming days are advised to remain cognizant of authorities’ updates and instructions regarding potential evacuations and travel disruptions caused by the volcano.
