Pakistan Tactical: Protest against PMC to be held at Karachi Press Club at 12:00 (local time) on September 27; maintain vigilance

Please be advised:

  • A protest against the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) is slated to take place at the Karachi Press Club at 12:00 (local time) on September 27.
  • Similar protests were witnessed nationwide on September 23 to demand a single-day nationwide Medical and Dental Colleges Admission Test (MDCAT). Currently, the MDCAT is being held over a month-long duration across the country.
  • Talks between a five-member PMC delegation and protesting students on the issue last week failed to yield a breakthrough.

Assessments:

Participation is likely to be in the mid-to-high dozens in line with attendance at previous protests staged in the city, as well as to sustain pressure on authorities after the failed negotiations with PMC representatives. Deployment of security personnel is likely at the venue, especially in light of violence at similar protests in the past in Karachi, as well as the violent clashes between police and protesters at student protest in Quetta on September 23Localized travel disruptions are expected near the venue.

Recommendations:

Those operating or residing in Karachi on September 27 are advised to maintain vigilance at the aforementioned location due to the slated protest and the risk of police intervention while allotting for disruptions to traffic.
