Thailand Tactical: Anti-government protest to take place at Victory Monument in Bangkok from 16:00 (local time) on August 18; avoid vicinity of demonstrations

Please be advised:

  • The Thalufah group is scheduled to hold a protest rally at Victory Monument in Bangkok from 16:00 (local time) on August 18 calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.
  • The group has been carrying out similar rallies in the past few days, with clashes recorded between protesters and security officials on August 16 near the Government House in Bangkok. The authorities employed water cannons and tear gas during the protest, which resulted in at least two individuals getting seriously injured.

Assessments:

Turnout at the protest is anticipated to be in the mid-to-low dozens, given heavy crackdown by authorities during similar rallies in the past few days held by the group, which is expected to have exacerbated protest sentiment. Given the risk of unrest attached to the protest, authorities are expected to set roadblocks in the vicinity of the protest site and use crowd-dispersal tactics like water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets should the protesters become unruly or participation is bolstered. Travel disruptions are expected near the protest. Protesters are also likely to change the demonstration venues at short notice to avoid the authorities’ crackdown, as has been witnessed in recent protests.

Recommendations:

Those operating or residing in Bangkok on August 18 are advised to avoid the vicinity of the aforementioned location given the slated protest.
