Turkey Tactical: Women’s rights protest to occur along Rihtim Street in Istanbul’s Kadikoy District at 19:30 (local time) on August 6; maintain heightened vigilance

Please be advised:

  • The event poster indicates that a protest is set to take place along Rihtim Street in Istanbul’s Kadikoy District at 19:30 (local time) on August 6.
  • The protest is being held to denounce the murder of a woman who was a victim of a violent crime. Her remains were found on August 2.
  • The protesters are calling for the implementation of the Istanbul Convention, an international human rights treaty to combat violence against women. Turkey withdrew from the convention on July 1.

Assessments & Forecast:

Civil rights groups have increasingly taken to protest against violence affecting women in recent weeks, particularly after Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention, as the move is perceived as the Turkish government’s lack of commitment to protect women’s rights and safety. FORECAST: Given the heightened sensitivities surrounding the government’s decision and the high mobilization capacity of such women’s rights organizations, the upcoming protest will likely garner a turnabout in the high dozens to low hundreds. The protest is expected to transpire peacefully. However, given that the protesters will express sentiments that are critical of the government, a high security deployment can be expected. Security forces may detain individuals for unruly behavior. Traffic disruptions are likely to occur along Rihtim Street for the duration of the event.

Recommendations:

Those operating or residing in Istanbul during the evening hours of August 6 are advised to maintain heightened vigilance in the vicinity of the Rihtim Street in Kadikoy District due to the planned protest and the potential for traffic disruptions during the event.
