USA Tactical: Two pro-Palestinian protests planned near Oscar Awards Ceremony in Los Angeles, CA, on March 10; maintain heightened vigilance

Current Situation

  • According to reports, pro-Palestinian activists have called for a demonstration at the Oscar Academy Awards Ceremony in Los Angeles, CA, on March 10, to protest the event amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
  • Members from Black Lives Matter, National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NAARPR), the US Palestinian Community Network, and other groups will gather at the intersection of Highland Avenue and Sunset Boulevard at 10:30 (local time) near Dolby Theater, where the event is slated to take place at 16:00.
  • Separately, members of Writers Against the War on Gaza Los Angeles (WAWOG), Film Workers for Palestine, SAG-AFTRA for Ceasefire and others have called for a protest march to begin at 13:00 at the Cinerama Dome, before moving towards the Dolby Theater, on March 10.
  • The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) stated it would bolster security presence at the awards ceremony to monitor proceedings.
  • On February 4, a few dozen pro-Palestinian protesters demonstrated outside the Grammy’s awards ceremony in Los Angeles, briefly blocking traffic near the drop-off area.

Assessments & Forecast

  1. Based on social media traction and mobilization capabilities of organizing groups, the upcoming demonstrations are expected to witness turnouts in the mid-to-high hundreds each.
  2. Given heightened sentiments among pro-Palestinian activists over the Israel-Hamas conflict, there is a likelihood of localized scuffles between protesters and security personnel.
  3. Further, protesters may also try to block traffic in the direction of the Dolby Theater, as seen during the Grammy’s Awards on February 4. Should clashes or disruptions to traffic occur during protests, law enforcement authorities are anticipated to conduct arrests.
  4. Disruptions to pedestrian and vehicular traffic can be expected near the Cinerama Dome and the Dolby Theater and surrounding streets, including Highland Avenue and Sunset Boulevard, on March 10 from the morning hours.

Recommendations

  1. Those operating or residing in Los Angeles, CA on March 10 are advised to maintain heightened vigilance in the vicinity of the planned pro-Palestinian protests due to the potential for unrest.
  2. Allot for traffic disruptions in the vicinity of the Cinerama Dome and Dolby Theater on March 10.
