Assessments & Forecast

  1. Based on social media estimates, coupled with the organizers’ mobilizational capabilities in each country, the slated May Day protest actions are expected to draw turnouts in the mid hundreds-to-low thousands each, with higher participation anticipated in Buenos Aires and Bogota.
  2. Spontaneous smaller protests ranging in the low-to-mid hundreds are likely to take place in other urban centers.
  3. Although most demonstrations are likely to transpire largely peacefully, instances of unrest in the form of clashes between protesters and police personnel remain likely amid protests, especially in Argentina, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela. Concurrently, clashes between anti-government protestors and pro-government counter protesters are liable to take place, particularly in Bogota.
  4. As such, a bolstered security presence can be expected in the vicinity of all protest locations. In the event of an escalation in unrest, forcible dispersal measures by the police including tear gas, water cannons, and mass arrests can be expected.
  5. Significant disruptions to vehicular and pedestrian traffic are anticipated in the vicinity of the aforementioned protest locations during the slated timings, while disruptions to public transportation also remain likely.
