Chile Tactical: Equipo Patriota slated to hold anti-government protests at intersection of La Alameda and Calle Morande in Santiago on March 1, 2, 4; allot for disruptions

Current Situation

  • According to reports, Equipo Patriota, a far-right group, has called for multiple anti-government protests in Santiago on March 1, 2, and 4.
  • On all three days, the group is slated to hold protest rallies at the intersection of Avenida Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins (La Alameda) and Calle Morande starting from 10:00 (local time) onwards.
  • The march on March 2 was initially slated from Plaza Baquedano to Avenida Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins but was denied permission by authorities.
  • Similar protest actions by Equipo Patriota have been recorded previously, including one on September 30, 2023 in Santiago which witnessed turnouts in the low hundreds.

Assessments & Forecast

  1. Based on social media traction and given precedent, the upcoming protests are likely to draw a turnout between the low-to-mid hundreds. There remains a limited possibility for spontaneous counter-protests by pro-government groups, likely near La Alameda, considering calls for similar mobilizations by pro-government protests in response to the Equipo Patriota march on September 30, 2023.
  2. The rallies are expected to transpire peacefully without incidents of unrest. Regardless, a bolstered security presence can be anticipated in the vicinity of La Alameda and Calle Morande in order to monitor proceedings and divert traffic.
  3. In addition, disruptions to vehicular and pedestrian travel can be expected near the aforementioned protest site from March 1, 2 and 4, with authorities likely to establish ad-hoc closures and security cordons.

Recommendations

Those operating or residing in Santiago on March 1, 2 and 4 are advised to allot for disruptions to vehicular and pedestrian travel due to the slated protests during the morning hours.
