  • Unionized air traffic controllers employed at Brindisi Airport (BDS), an airport in Brindisi, in southern Italy, will hold a 24-hour strike starting from 00:01 (local time) on April 8.
  • Additionally, unionized air traffic controllers at Bari Airport (BIS) in Bari, Puglia region. will hold a 4-hour strike from 13:00-17:00.
  • Reports suggest that multiple airlines Europewide have either cancelled or rescheduled their flights to the aforementioned airports due to the slated strike.

  • Separately, unionized cockpit workers employed with Air Dolomiti airline will hold a 24-hour strike on April 8. Air Dolomiti has announced that all flights departing from Italy to Germany on April 8 will be canceled.
  • Details regarding the airline operations and flight status are available here.

Assessments & Forecast

  1. Given precedent and the organizing unions’ mobilizational capabilities, the slated labor actions are expected to be widely adhered to.
  2. As such, significant disruptions to aviation services, including delays and cancelations of scheduled flights, are likely throughout the day at the aforementioned airports and the Air Dolomiti airline.  Residual disruptions and delays are also likely following the strike as airlines resolve passenger backlogs.
  3. While no associated protests have been announced as of writing, spontaneous demonstrations are likely to be held at BDS and BIS airports through the duration of the strikes.  Such protests are expected to attract a turnout in the high dozens to low hundreds and transpire largely peacefully.

Recommendations

Those intending to travel via the airports mentioned above and the Air Dolomiti airline in Italy on April 8 are advised to reconfirm itineraries and allot for travel-related disruptions due to the slated strike actions.
