Mexico Tactical: Environmental contingency, travel restrictions announced due to high ozone levels in Valley of Mexico on February 24; allot for disruptions

Current Situation

  • The Comision Ambiental de la Megalopolis (CAMe, Megalopolis Environmental Commission) announced that it would maintain Phase 1 of the atmospheric environmental contingency from 13:00 (local hours) to 19:00 on February 24. The contingency was initially activated on February 22 due to high ozone levels in the Valley of Mexico region, including Mexico City, and municipalities in State of Mexico and Hidalgo.
  • As per CAMe’s press release, the highest ozone concentration of 175 parts per billion (ppb) was recorded in Nezahualcoyotl, State of Mexico.
  • CAMe has also advised residents to avoid civic, cultural and recreational activities, as well as exercising outdoors between 13:00 and 19:00.
  • Meanwhile, vehicle restrictions have been announced for February 24 under the ‘Hoy No Circula’ program. Vehicles with green plate stickers, license plates ending with 1 and 2, and with hologram stickers numbered 1, 2, 0, and 00 have been suspended for circulation from 05:00 to 22:00. Additionally, local and federal cargo vehicles will not be allowed to circulate between 06:00 to 10:00.
